Peter W. Walker, PhD candidate, religion and loyalism, British empire

Columbia University

I am in the sixth and final year of the PhD at Columbia University, writing a dissertation titled “The Church Militant: The American Émigré Clergy and the Making of the British Counterrevolution, 1763-92”. This dissertation studies the role of the loyalist Anglican clergy in the American Revolution, their experience as refugees and émigrés, and their influence on the rebuilding the Church of England elsewhere in the British empire following American independence. The project was awarded an ACLS-Mellon Dissertation Completion Fellowship for 2015-16, and has also been supported by the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Philosophical Society, the Lewis Walpole Library, and the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church.
